Indonesian maids in Malaysia to have weekly day off

KUALA LUMPUR – Indonesian maids working in Malaysia will be given one day off a week and be allowed to hold onto their passports, the home ministry said Thursday, in a new deal triggered by a string of abuse cases.

Indonesia imposed a ban on sending maids to work here in June, after a 43-year-old Malaysian woman was charged with causing grievous bodily harm by beating her Indonesian maid and scalding her with boiling water.

Malaysia’s Home Ministry said in a statement that the new terms were agreed by senior Malaysian and Indonesian officials who met in August.

“The meeting has agreed that Indonesian maids will be allowed to keep their passport when they are working in this country,” it said.

Currently, employers typically hold onto maids’ passports, to prevent them running away or to exercise control over them.

“The Indonesian maids also will be given one day off a week,” it added

Stop Child Sex Trafficking Campaign

Dearest friends,
We at The Body Shop need your help and continuous support for our upcoming project to Stop Child Sex Trafficking. This global campaign kick-starts here in Malaysia on the 7th of August 2010 by a launch by The Body Shop and The Home Ministry followed by a march down Jalan Bukit Bintang where we will distribute leaflets and car stickers to bring about an awareness to this global issue which has plagued our shores for many years.
As such, we will need all the manpower necessary especially from you who appeal to the Malaysian crowd and can bring about the attention needed to march down the streets and create a ruckus in order to draw attention to the issue.
We have already received our police permit and approval from the ministry and as such will not jeopardise your involvement in any way. Please, please come and lend us your hands and be part of this change. Your support is greatly appreciated and we trust that together, we can make a difference. Please see the attachment for the official invite. My colleague Joanne or me will be calling you soon to find out if you will be part of this global change. Thanking you in advance.
Warmest,
Loshini Catherine John

A typical “home” of a refugee family

At the World Refugee Day exhibition held from the 19-20th of June at KL Sentral Station, visitors were shown an example a refugee’s home. Typically a whole family with young kids will stay in a space as small as this.

The space is small and cramped. And most of the refugees are very afraid of being detained by the authorities as illegal immigrants, therefore, they stay “caged” in this confined space for days – leaving only to work and buy necessities. Would you choose to leave your home country to live in fear like this?

Unlike migrants, refugees do not choose to leave their countries; they are compelled to do so because of serious discrimination in their home countries, armed conflict, serious public disorder and other complex human rights issues. The key difference between economic migrants and refugees is that economic migrants enjoy the protection of their home countries; refugees do not.

Refugees need our support. UNHCR in Malaysia has started a number of Self-Help Projects by the Refugees. Find out more about these Self-Help Projects here.
