More Than Five Million Foreign Workers In Malaysia By 2010?

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Bernama) — Malaysia would probably have more than five million foreign workers by 2010 if the current high demand for foreign labour from employers goes unabated, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn said.

“Malaysia currently has about 1.8 million foreign workers. At the same time, local employers are submitting a large number of applications monthly to the Home Affairs Ministry to employ more foreign workers.

“If this problem is not addressed now, it is highly probable that the number of foreign workers in this country may well exceed five million by 2010,” he said in a luncheon address at the Law Association for Asia and Pacific (Lawasia) Labour Law conference here.

He said the country had to deal with various aspects of foreign labour, especially pertaining to the legal and social framework like terms and conditions of employment, orientation and skills training, protection under the employment law, security of tenure, social security and insurance, trade unionism, industrial relations and industrial adjudication.

Advocacy: Refugees in Detention Centres

More and more refugees and asylum seekers are detained around the world, often in conditions below international standards, and denied their basic rights, including access to asylum.  Thus, there is an urgent need for increased involvement by advocates to monitor conditions of detention, to provide effective and quality legal representation and to promote access to asylum by those seeking international protection.

NGOs and individuals can play a number of vital roles in places of detention.  These include providing formal or informal services such as social support, welfare assistance, health care and legal advice.  Groups can also monitor places of detention and advocate at the local, national, regional and international levels on a range of issues, including those relating to the treatment of detainees, procedural safeguards forming the basis of detention, and material conditions of detention.  The challenges facing groups and individuals working in places of detention are many, including restrictions on access for legal aid providers, UNHCR and even the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), risk of reprisals, and ethical considerations relating to confidentiality and privacy issues.

FIGHT TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS

SAVE OUR DAUGHTERS
SAVE TENAGANITA’S “SHELTER”
FUND RAISING INITIATIVE
“The 180 persons x RM 100 CAUSE”
Trafficking of people is the 21st century’s most heinous crime that enslaves, demeans, and more often than not puts the life of the victims in danger.
Tenaganita has been combating trafficking in women and children since 1994. We had since launched 2 Campaigns, in 1995 and in 2006, a joint initiative with the Malaysian Police.
Tenaganita’s SHELTER has rescued hundreds of trafficked women and children sold into the sex trade or in debt bondage or trafficked for labor.
The women are abused, raped, beaten, denied food and medical care. They are held in captive, extremely exploited and denied any rights. The trauma they experience is incomprehensible. The road to recovery is a very long one. And the struggle to regain their dignity demands collective support.
Tenaganita’s Shelter journeys with the woman or child who has been trafficked, forced into prostitution or enslaved in bonded labor. The shelter’s team of people is committed to rescue, protect, care, counsel and empower the survivor. And then help to repatriate them safely back to their home countries in partnership with other organizations and support groups.
